Know Your Lines and Beat Them

Linemakers are professionals who use research and combined hundreds of years of personal experience to create the best lines with the smallest margin of error. Their goal is not to predict the winner. For example point spreads do not represent the experts prediction of the margin of victory. The expert linesmakers want to create a point spread that encourages fans of both teams to think they have a winning chance and thus evenly split the amount of money wagered for each team. This is known as dividing the action. This ensures the gambling establishments do not go bankrupt and consistently make profits. Because by dividing the action they still make the profit of their the fee charged to the bettor which can be around 5-10% of the amount bet. On the street this fee is referred to as the vig.
